On Friday, August 25th at Harborside International Golf Center we kicked off what is to become an annual tradition at “Links for Lax” 2017! OWLS staff and students were joined by lacrosse lovers, community members, and local businesses for a beautiful day of golf, food, and shared celebration of the OWLS mission.
The sun was shining and we had over 75 golfers on hand for the inaugural event. Guests we’re greeted early by Sherrod (OWLS Officiating Program), Elijah (CPS participant), and the hard-working young professionals of the OWLS Associate Board. We’re so thankful for all their help throughout the day! Following breakfast, the teams took to the beautiful Harborside Port Course. We had contests littered throughout including longest drive, closest to the pin, and longest putt. The actual tournament came down to a “putt-off” tiebreaker between Matt Karweck (Notre Dame) and Matt Ward (ESPNU, Virginia). Congrats to Team Ward for winning the “Links for Lax” trophy!
Following the tourney we had a wonderful luncheon that included the silent auction, announcement of contest winners, and speeches from individuals within the OWLS organization. Our founder Sam Angelotta started it off with an update on our program initiatives and goals moving forward this school year. We then heard from an OWLS parent, Bryon McClain who discussed his son’s overwhelmingly positive experience in the program since 3rd grade. Sherrod Cobbins, an OWLS Official’s Program participant then spoke about what he’s learned about communication and responsibility as a result of his participation. Finally, OWLS Executive Board member Kevin Corrigan (Notre Dame) keynoted the luncheon with a hair-raising talk about his career beginnings in South Bend and the immense progress we’ve made in the past year as an organization. Thanks to all of our speakers!
All in all we raised almost $20,000 for OWLS programs! A very special thank you goes out to our community of supporters that contribute to our student-athletes through their financial generosity. Without these individuals, organizations, businesses and schools our efforts to transform at-risk youth through our programming would fall short. We have an incredible amount of appreciation for our donor base, and we will do our absolute best to ensure that all donors understand the impact they’re making for OWLS. We will continue to develop service-oriented, driven, responsible, and passionate students. Lastly, we would like to thank Harborside International for hosting an incredible event!
